A product-agnostic DPP engine: from jewelry to textiles
The hard part of a Digital Product Passport is not any single category — it is building an engine that does not care which category it serves. A verification-and-traceability engine that is product-agnostic, where only the attribute profile changes, is what turns a one-off compliance project into reusable infrastructure.
One engine, many product categories
The technical layer of the DPP is deliberately horizontal. The same identifier, the same data carrier, the same interface and the same signature serve a battery, a garment or a construction material — the EU harmonised standards (the EN 1821x series cited in the Official Journal in July 2026) were written that way on purpose. A well-designed platform mirrors that horizontality: a common core, plus a category profile that defines which attributes matter and how each is evidenced.
This is not a slide. The engine is in real production in silver jewellery, emitting lifecycle events in GS1 EPCIS 2.0. The textile profile is built on the same engine and is, today, a work-in-progress demonstrator — not a case already operating with real textile companies. Proving the architecture once, in production, is what makes the next category a matter of profiling rather than rebuilding.
Built on open standards, end to end
- GS1 EPCIS 2.0 — the open supply-chain event standard — as the lifecycle backbone, emitted as a portable document (self-describing XML + PDF with the XML embedded).
- GS1 Digital Link (EN 18219): a scannable identifier that resolves to the passport.
- API specified to standard (EN 18216 / EN 18222, OpenAPI): the node’s API surface is specified against the norm, not against bilateral integrations — interoperable by design. Specified, not yet certified.
- Verifiable credentials (
did:web, aligned with EN 18246): every attested attribute carries a signature that any third party can check cryptographically, turning lineage integrity into a provable property rather than a claim.
Provenance you can trust, honestly labelled
Interoperability is worthless if the data it moves is not trustworthy — and trust is not binary. Every attribute in the passport carries its epistemic level (declared · attested · verified · measured) and its issuer. The node guarantees the integrity of the record —what was asserted, by whom, and when— without claiming the material truth of the assertion, which belongs to whoever declares or verifies it. That separation, made executable by cryptographic signatures, is what lets an operator, a recycler and a market-surveillance authority read the same passport and know exactly how far to trust each field.
Stated with the same discipline: in the textile demonstrator, composition is today declared, not measured; the system is prepared to ingest accredited-lab results when that phase arrives, but nothing is claimed as measured yet.
Why product-agnostic is the strategic point
A passport that only works for one category is a project. A passport engine that works for any category, on open standards, with years of real event data already accumulating, is infrastructure — and infrastructure is what the regulation will need receivers for. The multichannel front-end is how items enter the registry; the registry, reusable across categories, is the company.
