Verifiable Second Life: How a DPP Tracks Repair, Resale and Recycling
Most product records end at the checkout. The value the circular economy is chasing — reuse, repair, resale, recovery — all happens after that. The second life is where circular value lives
A product’s first life is short; its second can be long. But every circular business model — resale, refurbishment, recycling — runs on the same scarce ingredient: trustworthy information about the object in hand. Is this piece authentic? What is it actually made of? Has it been repaired, and by whom? Without answers you can verify, resale is a gamble and recycling is guesswork. Second-life events, written by the actors who perform them
After delivery, the passport keeps accruing verifiable events:
- Repair — what was serviced, recorded by a verified repairer, so the history is honest rather than hidden.
- Remanufacture — components or material recovered and rebuilt into a new life.
- Resale — ownership transfers with the object, and the buyer inherits the full, checkable lineage instead of a story.
- Recycling — at end-of-life, the material composition is right there for the recycler, so the piece is recovered correctly instead of downcycled or landfilled.
The key word throughout is verifiable: each event is written by the party who actually did the work, under their role-scoped access (how the access levels work), and signed so anyone can check it later.
Why “verifiable” changes the economics
A resale market without verification prices in the risk of fraud — everything trades at a discount because the buyer can’t be sure. Verifiable provenance removes that discount: a piece with a checkable history is worth more, moves faster, and can be insured and financed on better terms. The same record that reassures a second-hand buyer tells a recycler exactly what they’re recovering. Trust, resale value and recyclability turn out to be the same problem, solved once.
Built for the regulation, and for reality
This is exactly the direction the EU’s Ecodesign regulation (ESPR) and right-to-repair rules are pushing: products whose data outlives their first owner.
